Chocolate making
Take a Willy-Wonka style tour at Chocolaterie Letuffe in Angoulême. Okay, so you don't get to float down a chocolate river, and as far as we know there's not an oompa-loompa in site. But, they do offer a 90 minute workshop which teaches you to make and decorate your very own chocolate creations.
The workshops are open to adults (cost €10.50) and children (€8.50).
River cruise
Hire your own boat and take a cruise down the River Charente, one of the most beautiful waterways in France. Sail past historical towns, wildlife-rich river banks and the regimented vineyards of Cognac country. Several companies offer boats with a fully equipped kitchen, so you can make stops wherever you please.
Donkey in trousers
The donkeys on Ile de Ré were once used for work in the salt marshes, wearing trousers to protect their legs from mosquitos. That's no longer the case today, but Parc de la Barbette in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, now offer donkey rides for children.
Go-karting
Outdoor go-karting circuit with three professionals on hand. The circuit is run by Passion Karting and situated in Saint-Jean d'Angély. Open every day in July and August from 3pm-8pm.
Open weekends and bank holidays from March - June and September - October.
Indoor play centre
Chouette Land, not far from Poitiers, accommodates children aged 2 - 12. Giant Inflatable slides await them, as well as a go-karting track and farm animals. There is a snack bar serving sandwiches, ice creams and drinks.
Opening hours: 1.30pm-7pm, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, public holidays and school holidays. 10am-8pm during the summer school holidays. The go-kart track is only open to 5pm.

accompanying adults are free.
La Rochelle Aquarium
Reportedly the best aquarium in Europe, this is home to 12,000 marine animals, and includes an impressive shark tank over three levels.
